The black cat is a minor character in the game that the players will run into in on the beach or Fort Joy. The first player that moves across the area the cat is foud is the person that the cat will follow. Make sure to take the lead if you plan on having the cat follow you first. It may be a good idea to save the game as soon as you arrive at Fort Joy in case the cat follows the wrong person in the party to begin with.

Not crossing paths withthe black cat is almost impossible as it will approach the player as they make their way to Fort Joy on the beach. It is recomended to have someone with the Pet Pal perk approach the cat as they will be able to speak with the cat as well.

What Does the Black Cat Do?

To begin with, the cat will only follow you around. One thing you have to keep in mind if you wish to utilise the cat later is you must keep the cat alive. The cat will simply attempt to flee every fight you get yourself in within Fort Joy. Enemies will in general not target the Black Cat with their attacks but the cat is still susceptible to damage including sources like environmental damage.

Once the team has left Fort Joy, the player that first had the cat approach them will gain a new ability. This ability will give the player the ability to summon the cat into battle. The cat is able to then attack and has a really great utility. The cat has the ability to leap great heights making it great for travelling ground.

The player that summons the cat can also use an ability which allows them to swap places with the cat. Fantastic for ranged character who would like to gain some height advantage in battle.

How to Keep the Black Cat Alive in Fort Joy

One of the biggest challenges is actually keeping the cat from dying. At the front gates of Fort Joy there is a guard that will shoot the blakc cat on sight if the players approach. To keep the cat alive you will have to keep it away from this guard. In fact, you will not even get the chance to defend the cat, it will be defeated immediately.

In this case, you will have to enter fort joy through the ladder on the path to the right of the main entrance. Also, keep away from the front gate at all costs. You will also have to make sure they don’t get defeated accidently in battle. In general, it isn’t particularly hard as the cat tries to avoid danger at all costs anyway. That being said, make sure you save often whilst in Fort Joy to make sure you can always roll back in case it gets killed.
