Let’s face it. Sometimes we make poor decisions in life. One of which may be that the lord or lady that you’ve chosen to be your partner in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord is no longer the one you wish to conquer Calradia with.
Marrying can be quite the challenge without a good amount of charm skill, but if you’ve decided you wish to find another spouse, you will have to ‘get rid’ of the old one first as there is no multiple wives/husbands in Calradia. This guide will show you how to divorce your current spouse to make room for the next!
How to Unmarry in Bannerlord
Let’s just start this off as plain and simply as possible. There is no option to divorce your partner in the game currently. You can’t just speak with them or pay anyone off to sign any divorce papers. That being said, you aren’t as stuck as you think.
There are two ways that you can get rid of your current wife or husband in Bannerlord;
- If they happen to die in battle or by being executed by another lord/lady
- By using console commands to kill off your spouse and become a widow
I’ll go into detail on some of the ways you can achieve the first option and then show you how to use console commands to no longer be with your wife/husband.
Becoming a Widow in Vanilla Bannerlord
The only way to naturally get out of a marriage in vanilla Bannerlord is by your spouse dying. This is a pretty tough pill to swallow but unfortunately that’s how the game mechanics work. I’ll try to show you how you can improve your chances of having your spouse fall in combat so you are free to choose another.
There are some things we need to ensure before we attempt to have your spouse die in battle however. First of all, ensure that you have the settings for hero deaths in battle enabled. Without this, there is a 0% chance that any lord or lady can fall in battle and not come back.
Firstly, open up the pause menu with the ESC key. Next, head over to the Campaign Options. Under these options there is two in particular we are interested in. These are Clan Member Death Possibility in Battles and Hero Deaths in Combat. You should have these set to Realistic and Enable Battle Death For All Heroes respectively.
Now that we are sure that hero deaths in battle are at the highest chance they can be, we can try to even the odds in our favor. Every time you go into battle make sure you take a ranged weapon. This can be javelins or a bow and arrow. Now, just hit your spouse with friendly fire until they are defeated. There is a small chance every battle that a hero is knocked out, that they will die permanently in the game.
This means, you will just have to keep getting into battles with your spouse and either sending them in directly at the enemies to make sure they are taken down or taking them out yourself with ranged weapons.
How to Divorce in Bannerlord Using Console Commands
Even though Divorce may be in the title, this one is basically going to be just as dark as the first method but without too much time-wasting. Basically you are going to have to input a console command that will kill your spouse in the game. There is currently no way to end the marriage and have the person go back to their original clan in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord.
To use console commands/cheats you will first have to enable them in the console. Hold ALT and press the ~ key to open the console. To enable cheats type the following into the console and hit enter: “config.cheat_mode 1” . Cheats will not be enabled. The console command that is used to kill off the person that you married by mistake it as follows:
campaign.kill_hero “Hero’s Name“
For example to divorce my wife Alynneth I type in the code campaign.kill_Alynneth and press enter. The chosen hero is killed immediately and you can remarry as you wish. The game will call the death an Assassination in the character’s encyclopedia page.
