One of the great food sources that can keep you alive and fed for a long time in post apocalyptic RPG Project Zomboid is canned food. Canned food will never go bad and does not have to be refrigerated at all, making it a great food type to stock up on. To open canned food however, you will also need to get your hands on a can opener to open it.
This guide will show you where you can find a can opener and how to use one in order to open cans in the game.
Where to Find a Can Opener
The biggest challenge you’ll face is finding a can opener in Project Zomboid. Luckily they are a very common loot spawn. As you can imagine, can openers can be found in kitchens of residential houses. As aforementioned they are a very common spawn so you will just have to keep looking through houses until you find one.
It doesn’t matter what type of house you are looking in, as long as you are searching through the kitchen cupboards. You can look in mobile homes, fancy houses or even regular houses. If you still can’t find any can openers after looting house kitchens for a long time then there may be something wrong with your version of the game or the mods you have installed.
How to Open Canned Food in Project Zomboid
So you have a can opener and a bunch of food. Now you able to dig in to those delicious baked beans. To open up canned food with a can opener, first move the can opener into your inventory. This can be either in one of the bags on your character or in their main inventory.
Now, right-click on the canned food you wish to open. Here you can see the action menu for this item. When you hover over open Canned x, you will see that the character will use the can opener to open this. Select this option and your character will open the food. Make sure you are attempting this only in a safe space as it will take a short amount of time for your character to physically do this.
Moving around while the character is attempting to open a can will result in the action being cancelled and you will have to try again.
Opening Cans Without a Can Opener
Unfortunately for most cans you will need a can opener in order to use them. That being said, there are some canned foods that the don’t require a can opener to open. Canned Oats, canned sardines and some other cans won’t require a can opener in order to open them up.
There is however a popular mod on the steam workshop called More Can Openers which will allow the player to use other items such as knives or rocks to open cans as well. There are certain strength requirements for some weapons and the mod is a great “realistic” mod which doesn’t take too much away from the vanilla game experience.
