How to Make Doors in Dwarf Fortress

When planning your colony in Dwarf Fortress, you will need to create different rooms for different activities. Dwarves will not be happy to eat in their sleeping quarters, or want to train animals in their kitchen. For this you can create different rooms with different functions.

This guide will show you how to make doors and how to place them down to make different rooms. It will cover each step on your way to master door crafting!

How to Craft Doors in Dwarf Fortress

Crafting a door for you rooms may seem a little complicated at first but is quite easy once you know the steps. You can select any of the steps below to get more details about them, but for the sake of keeping this article to the point i will write the process here.

To craft doors in Dwarf Fortress follow these steps:

As with most furniture, you will have to first craft it before placing it down. Doors can also be crafted out of different materials at different crafting stations. I have chosen wood for this example as it is generally the easiest to find and use. You can select the heading you want to have more details on above, or scroll through the instructions below.

Building a Carpenter’s Workshop

One of the easiest things to build is the carpenter’s workshop. To create this, simply open the build menu by pressing the B hotkey, or selecting the icon at the bottom bar with the stone hammer and wall. Select Workshop and then select Carpenter. Now, place your workshop in any free space. It will only take 1 wood to build it.

Now that you have a Carpenter’s Workshop, you can make sure there is at least one dwarf assigned to Carpentry under the Labor menu. (Y hotkey)

Crafting a Door at the Workshop

Now that you have a workshop and a dwarf ready to craft, you can make a door! Select the workshop in order to have something be created there. Furniture and other items will only be created when you give the order to do so.

Firstly, select the workshop. You will find a button in this menu which reads Add new task. Here, you can queue different items to be crafted here. This will show a list of all of the crafting orders once you have some. You can also move them up or down and they will be crafted in order from top to bottom.

After selecting add new task scroll through the list to find the Make wooden door task. Alternatively, you can search for door in the search filter at the top. Select this and it will be added to the list of tasks.

Placing a Door to Create a Room in Dwarf Fortress

Once a door is created it will be placed in your colony’s stockpile. You can now choose where this door will be installed. It will need to be installed to at least one wall.

Placing down a door in Dwarf Fortress to create a room

To place a door in your fortress, once again select the Place/build button at the bottom, or press B. (The hammer and wall) In the build menu, select the option Doors/hatches. In the next menu, select Door. Now, you can place the door wherever you wish. You also have two options in a box which will appear in the top right. You can either choose the type of door you want to use after choosing the location, or use the nearest item that matches. Should you choose the former, you will be able to decide which type of door to use after determining a location.

A dwarf will automatically grab the door from the stockpile and install the door once you have made the selection.
