A Workshop For a Furniture
Before your dwarves will be able to craft any furniture at all they will need a place to do so. Beds are crafted at the Carpenter’s Workshop. This is a crafting station where dwarves can be assigned to do specific work. To craft one of these, select the Place structures button. (You can use the hotkey b to open this menu.) With this menu open, select the option Workshops. Now, find the Carpenter option here.
Place down the Carpenter’s Workshop wherever you have enough space. You will need 1 unit of any wood to build this workshop. Once your dwarves are finished building this workshop, you are able to start crafting furniture items.
How to Craft a Bed in Dwarf Fortress
Now that we have ourselves a workshop in which to craft furniture, we can begin to make a bed. To craft a bed in Dwarf Fortress, follow these steps:
- Select the Carpenter’s Workshop.
- Select the button Add new task.
- Find the task Make bed by either scrolling the list or searching in the bar at the top and select it.
- Wait for a carpenter-assigned dwarf to craft the bed at the station.
Now that you have set a task, one of your citizens will craft the bed when it becomes a priority. If you want to speed up this process, you can select the exclamation point on the task. This will set it to a high priority and someone will begin this task immediately.
Once you have crafted a bed it will be taken to a stockpile within your colony. Next we will learn how to place the bed somewhere in your colony.
Placing a Bed in Dwarf Fortress
Now that we have a bed, let’s put it to use! To place a bed down in a location, we will have to once again open up the build menu by selecting the hammer and wall icon at the bottom or by hitting the b key. Instead of selecting Workshops however, we want to select the option Furniture. This will allow us to place down furniture items that are present in the colony.
Select this and then then find Bed in the list. It should be at the top. Place these down in the area you want your dwarves to have a bedroom. They will now be able to rest on their very own beds when they are tired! That is sure to stop them from burning down your fortress, at least for another few days….
